Madi’s first day of school was yesterday! I can’t believe it but my youngest is now in Kindergarten. This Monday was very exciting for the whole household. Sean, my oldest, was excited about his first day, too. My husband also returned to work after two weeks of leave while I was in the Philippines for a visit.
The morning was very hectic with everybody trying to get ready. It calmed down a bit when Matt left for work. Sean finished getting ready and we walked him to school. He was so excited to see his friends again. Madi finished her breakfast when we got home. We talked about things she should expect while in school and some do’s and don’ts.
We laid out her outfit for the day and realized that none of her shoes fit. We tried all school-appropriate footwear but none of them fit even the ones purchased just last month … her feet grew a size larger just in the last month. We rushed to the store to get a pair and while out we decided to pick out a few outfits as well. We dashed home for her to take a quick shower and eat lunch. We barely made it to the bus stop at the designated time as we ran along the way. Luckily, the bus was a few minutes late so I took a few pictures while waiting. She was so excited to ride the bus and was not anxious at all. She met a few girls who will be in her class that were in her preschool the year before.
It didn’t hit me that she will finally be off to school and we won’t be together the whole day until the bus started to pull away. I felt a sense of loneliness and was reminded that I was getting older because the kids are now both in school. I immediately called my husband to relay to him how I felt. He instantly comforted me with the thought that I could finally catch up on things at home.
I was so excited to see my kids that I walked to the pick-up point early. Sean was waiting for me while Madi’s bus ran late. Sean excitedly told me about his day and how he caught up with his best friend from last year and played during recess. I felt so pleased that his day went well, as expected. When Madi’s bus pulled up and I saw her walking out of the building, she ran towards her brother and happily walked towards me. When she caught my eye, she ran straight to me and mentioned how wonderful her day was and that she met a friend, Maggie. We talked all about her day during our walk home.
I felt relieved knowing that my children can handle themselves appropriately and did not experience separation anxiety unlike other kids at the bus stop. It makes me feel good that I did my job as their mother … but they are growing up so fast.
The day went well for everyone along with my husband’s. We all felt exhausted at the end of the day and can’t wait to go to bed … to repeat the same thing all over again.
