Children's Interests

Lately, my husband has been taking the kids fishing everyday after work and once during the weekend. Everyone has been having a wonderful time. We've been spending some money on new fishing poles, lures, and bait. Yet, they have only caught one ... yes, I said 1 trout so far. It was a 9 1/2 inch trout. My husband took his time to clean it, fillet it, and now it sits in the freezer. I guess it's somewhat of a trophy of their attempts. The kids were just so excited when they brought it home. It was the highlight of our evening. If they had only asked if they could stuff it and hang it on our wall, I might have been agreeable to that ... only at that time ... because of how happy they were at the time -- I'm glad they didn't ask.

Last night, my husband brought home my son's new bow and arrow. They ordered it about a month ago and it finally came yesterday. They went to the store and had it adjusted and tested. My son practiced shooting in the backyard until it was dark. He was pretty good, if I should say so. He shot the bullseye a few times and mostly in a cluster within the target. He did miss ... just once. He was so happy -- I was very proud!

Oh! they are not cheap. The bow and arrow, plus a few accessories, and a target is almost $300. I don't recall my family spending this much for a seasonal activity on me. I guess times have changed and parents like me who grew up with next to nothing would do anything to make our kids happy and involved. For my husband and I, it's our way to connect with our kids. My husband loves archery and hunting. My husband has recently bought a new bow and arrow, as well. I constantly pester him about it because he spent $600 while I've been wanting to buy a Louis Vuitton bag for a while now. It's about $500 but my husband says it's too much since I already have plenty of Coach and Dooney and Burke bags. In order to make him feel guilty for his recent purchase I tell him that at least I will use the bag everyday. While the bow has been kept under our bed since he bought it. He occasionally takes it out and pull the string as if he was getting ready to shoot.

Well, tomorrow is opening day for turkey season. My husband and son will spend the day hunting. They are planning to bring their bows and arrows but will also bring their guns, just in case. If they shoot a turkey, we'll be having turkey next week!
